The UK Government has announced a contribution of £1 million (PHP 74.14 million) to aid the Philippines in responding to the devastating impact of recent typhoons.
This funding aims to assist the most affected communities in recovering from the successive storms that have caused widespread damage across the country.
Ambassador Laure Beaufils expressed solidarity with the Filipino people, stating: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and destruction of homes and livelihoods brought about by these typhoons… The UK government stands beside the people affected by the devastating impact of the recent typhoons in the Philippines.
We are hopeful that our assistance to the humanitarian efforts will help the most vulnerable to recover from the impact of the successive typhoons”.
The funding will support critical initiatives through partnerships with international organizations. A portion of the funds will go to the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide cash assistance, enabling affected families to meet immediate needs and begin rebuilding their livelihoods.
Additionally, the UK will collaborate with UNICEF to address urgent water, sanitation, and hygiene needs. The focus will be on providing access to safe drinking water, especially in flood-hit regions like Bicol, and improving sanitation and waste management systems to mitigate health risks.
Relief efforts are expected to reach communities impacted by Typhoon Kristine, Typhoon Pepito, and other storms starting the weekend of November 23. These initiatives aim to complement the Philippine government’s ongoing relief operations, ensuring that assistance reaches the hardest-hit areas quickly and effectively.
Beyond this £1 million bilateral aid, the UK is also leveraging centrally managed funds to support the response:
“Start Ready” Fund: £595,000 has been allocated to provide rapid emergency assistance in Cagayan.
Disaster Response Emergency Fund: The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies allocated CHF 900,000 to the Philippine Red Cross’ relief efforts.
UN Central Emergency Response Fund: Released $3.5 million to enhance the UN's humanitarian response in the Philippines.
