As clashes between rival military factions in Sudan persist, the United States has evacuated its embassy staff from the country and France has announced plans to
evacuate its diplomats. The ongoing fighting, which erupted on April 15, has caused a humanitarian crisis and has claimed the lives of more than 400 people. The conflict involves Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who jointly staged a coup in 2021.
Despite daily ceasefires, including a three-day truce for Eid al-Fitr, both sides have continued to engage in violence. The RSF claims that dozens were "killed and injured" in an air strike on its forces in Bahri's Kafouri district on Sunday. The clashes have also led to the closure of Khartoum's airport, causing difficulty for those seeking to leave the country. The situation in Sudan is alarming and threatens to draw in outside powers, causing further destabilization in the region. Photo by Christopher Michel from San Francisco, USA, Wikimedia commons.
