British Queen celebrates

Aldi is once again seeking approval to open a store in Thames Ditton, Surrey, following the rejection of its initial application by Elmbridge Borough Council in 2022.

The supermarket giant has launched a public consultation for its revised proposal, which focuses on the site of the former Guy Salmon Jaguar Land Rover showroom on Portsmouth Road. The original plan was turned down due to concerns about its impact on nearby homes, a listed pub, and the surrounding conservation area. Even an appeal was unsuccessful.

Critics of the initial design likened the proposed store to "an alien spaceship," citing its modern aesthetic as unsuitable for the area. Local groups and residents expressed significant opposition, highlighting the development's potential to disrupt the character of the neighborhood.

In response to the feedback, Aldi has reworked its design and announced a "revised planning application." According to the company, the updated proposal includes a store that is "significantly lower in height," features a more traditional facade, and incorporates additional trees and hedges to enhance screening and reduce the store's impact on nearby properties.

Aldi has invited residents to view the new plans, which will be on public display at Dittons Library from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM on December 9. The company is also encouraging feedback via its website as part of its effort to engage the community in shaping the proposal.

The outcome of this revised bid remains to be seen, as Aldi hopes the changes address the concerns that led to the rejection of its previous application. Photo by Aldi, Shaw by michael ely, Wikimedia commons.
