British Queen celebrates

Hundreds of thousands of rural homes and businesses across the UK are set to receive significant internet speed upgrades as part of the UK Government's initiative to

bridge the digital divide and enhance connectivity across the nation.

The government has committed up to £800 million to modernize broadband infrastructure, aiming to eliminate poor broadband access for approximately 312,000 homes and businesses in rural areas of England, Scotland, and Wales. This initiative marks the first time Wales, which currently has the lowest percentage of gigabit coverage, will benefit from such an extensive connectivity upgrade.

The upgrades will bring gigabit-capable broadband to remote areas, including the South Wales Valleys, Exmoor National Park, and the Forest of Bowland. Residents and businesses in these regions, who have long struggled with outdated broadband infrastructure, will finally gain access to the fastest internet speeds available, enhancing productivity and supporting economic growth.

This initiative is part of the government's broader Project Gigabit, a program designed to extend high-speed internet access to areas where commercial providers find it too costly to build. The partnership with telecoms provider Openreach is a significant milestone in the project, helping to meet the increasing demand for reliable connectivity, fostering local rural economies, and reducing regional disparities.

The announcement reinforces the UK Government's commitment to achieving full gigabit coverage by 2030, leveraging technology to drive economic growth, spur innovation, and improve the quality of life across the country.

Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Peter Kyle said:

“Over the past decade, the UK’s broadband rollout has clearly not happened fast enough and has overlooked too many areas, especially in Scotland and Wales. Robust digital infrastructure is essential for growth, productivity and competitiveness and this shortfall not only poses risks to our economic stability, but also entrenches existing inequalities across the country.

We are fixing this by delivering for hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses up and down the country, focusing on the areas that were not prioritised by the previous government, such as Wales.

Today marks a significant milestone in delivering on our promise to redouble our efforts to achieve full gigabit coverage by 2030 and lay the foundations for a more inclusive, dynamic and prosperous future for all citizens”. Photo by RRZEicons, Wikimedia commons.
