Three individuals have been formally accused under the National Security Act for allegedly aiding the Hong Kong intelligence service and engaging in foreign interference. T
hey are scheduled to appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court later.
The Metropolitan Police clarified that this investigation pertaining to Hong Kong is distinct from another case involving Russia.
Under the framework of the investigation, a total of 11 individuals were detained under section 27 of the National Security Act.
The three charged men are identified as Chi Leung (Peter) Wai, aged 38, residing in Staines-upon-Thames; Matthew Trickett, aged 37, from Maidenhead; and Chung Biu Yuen, aged 63, from Hackney.
Commander Dominic Murphy, leading the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, emphasized, "I want to reassure the public that we do not perceive any broader threat to their safety. While the investigation is ongoing, with charges now laid, I urge restraint from speculative commentary on this case."
Police further disclosed that on 1st May, eight men and a woman were apprehended by counter-terrorism officers in the Yorkshire region. Subsequently, on the following day, a man was arrested in London, and another in the Yorkshire area.
