The British Army is set to enhance its security measures with the introduction of cutting-edge bomb disposal robots, announced in a new deal unveiled today (May 10).
Under the agreement, 50 T4 bomb disposal robots, equipped to handle explosives and hazardous materials, will be deployed to bolster the capabilities of the Army's explosives teams. These robots, manufactured by L3 Harris Technologies, will significantly reduce risks to both service personnel and the public during bomb disposal operations across the nation.
With a £21 million investment, the first batch of T4 units is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024. These robots boast advanced features, including the ability to navigate narrow urban spaces, traverse tough terrains, and even climb stairs, ensuring their effectiveness in various environments.
Equipped with state-of-the-art controls, high-definition cameras, and rapid data links, operators of the T4 robots can perform intricate tasks such as handling suspicious bags and opening glove boxes from a safe distance.
James Cartlidge, Minister for Defence Procurement, emphasized the importance of providing armed forces with cutting-edge technology to safely address explosive threats. The procurement of these high-tech robots aligns with the UK's Drone Defence Strategy, ensuring readiness to face future threats.
Weighing just over 100kg, the T4 robots are significantly smaller and more agile than previous models, making them ideal for rapid response situations. Their compact size enables easy transportation in standard 4x4 vehicles.
Both the T4 and its larger counterpart, the T7 UGV, utilize advanced haptic feedback technology, allowing operators to "feel" their way through disarming devices remotely, thereby minimizing risks to operators' lives.
The procurement of these systems, managed by Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), includes three years of in-service maintenance and repair support. Major General Lizzie Faithfull-Davies of DE&S praised the project team for harnessing cutting-edge technology to address critical security needs and ensure public safety.
The T4 robots will be deployed with the 29 EOD & Search Group, the Diving Threat and Exploitation Group, and the Royal Gibraltar Regiment (RG) and Cyprus Operational Support Unit (COSU).
Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris, highlighted the T4 robots' capabilities in crowded and challenging environments, underscoring their role in protecting human lives. L3Harris reaffirmed its commitment to working with the UK Ministry of Defence to provide state-of-the-art technology to the British Army.
