According to data from the Department for Education (DfE), more than half of state schools in England restricted access to pupils or were fully closed during teacher strikes by the National
Education Union (NEU). The strikes were in response to a pay dispute, causing disruption to pupils and parents. On Tuesday, teachers returned to picket lines for the latest strike in the long-running row.
The DfE stated that 50% of the 16,400 state schools known about were open but restricting attendance, while 5% were closed. The most affected region was London, where 18% of state schools were fully open on Tuesday. The NEU is due to meet this month to decide whether to approve three more strike days in late June or early July, with the strike dates in the summer term “very likely” to go ahead.
