The play revolves around a wealthy resident of ancient Athens who lavishly spent his fortune on his selfish friends, only to be abandoned when he lost all his wealth.
While Spacey did not explicitly address why he chose this particular play for his return to the stage, the story bears a parallel to his own life. In 2018, amid the #MeToo movement, multiple allegations of sexual assault surfaced against the actor, leading to his effective "cancellation."
In July, Spacey, aged 64, was acquitted of numerous sexual assault charges following a lengthy trial in London. The court, after more than 12 hours of deliberation, reached majority verdicts on nine counts, including sexual assault. This trial spanned several weeks and included testimony from notable witnesses, such as British rock star Elton John, who appeared on Spacey's behalf.
During the trial, Spacey faced seven charges of sexual assault, one charge of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and one charge of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.
