British Queen celebrates

The prospect of nuclear weapons returning to a US Air Force base in Suffolk has sparked concerns that the area might become a target for Vladimir Putin.

Documents from the Pentagon indicate that RAF Lakenheath is making preparations to accommodate bombs with explosive power many times greater than the one dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II.

If realized, this would be the first instance in over a decade of the US storing such weapons on British soil, although it remains unclear whether this move is linked to the conflict in Ukraine.

The resulting reports, combined with escalating tensions between the West and Russia, have stirred significant anxiety among residents of the nearby village of Lakenheath.

Some residents fear that their homes could become the primary target for the Russian president in the event of World War III.

According to Alan Turner, as reported by the Sun, "People living here know what might happen one day – and they get used to it."

Hans Kristensen, of the Federation of American Scientists, was among the first to suggest the possibility of nuclear weapons returning to the site.

Speaking to the BBC, he emphasized, "There is no doubt that if you have nuclear weapons on a base, that base is more likely to be targeted in a nuclear conflict with Russia... There is no doubt that once you have nuclear weapons in, it is a different ball game."

Mr. Alberque suggested that it was ‘highly likely’ the British base was already a Russian target, adding, "If I am a Russian military planner, I am already going to hit it. If you watch Russian television, they talk about the UK a lot; they talk about nuking the UK a lot."

Situated approximately 80 miles northeast of London and 25 miles northeast of Cambridge, the military base currently hosts 4,000 US military personnel and an additional 1,500 British and US civilian staff. Photo by Christine Matthews, Wikimedia commons.
