British Queen celebrates

Big businesses dealing in potentially harmful products should bear greater responsibility for public health, says Sir Frank Atherton, the chief medical officer of Wales. He emphasizes the need

for companies to take more serious steps in reducing sugar and salt intake. Government regulation may be considered if industries fail to prioritize health over wealth. His annual report titled "Shaping Our Health" highlights concerns over the growing issue of obesity, stating that over 60% of the population and nearly one-third of primary school children are overweight or obese. Sir Frank also points out that products like vapes are promoted through the strategies of the companies marketing them.

In addition to health, the report underlines the importance of addressing the impacts of climate change and the rising cost of living. These issues, he says, can be as detrimental to the nation's well-being as the Covid-19 pandemic. The negative effects of the cost of living crisis are disproportionately affecting those with the lowest incomes. A public health response to this crisis is urgently needed, as the long-term effects on the next generation could be significant.

Sir Frank also emphasizes climate change as the "largest and most complex public health challenge of our time." He calls on businesses to acknowledge their impact on the environment and criticizes "green-washing." Healthcare facilities need to do more for the environment to address the health risks associated with climate change.
