The second UK-EU Cyber Dialogue convened in London on Thursday, 5 December, and Friday, 6 December 2024. The event, held under the framework of the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation
Agreement, brought together key stakeholders to discuss critical issues in cybersecurity and digital resilience.
Key Participants and Co-Chairs
The meeting was co-chaired by Andrew Whittaker, Cyber Director at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and Rod Latham, Director of Cyber Security and Digital Identity at the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). Representing the European Union (EU) were Maciej Stadejek, Director of Security and Defence Policy at the European External Action Service (EEAS), and Christiane Kirketerp de Viron, Acting Director for Digital Society, Trust, and Cybersecurity at the European Commission's DG CNECT.
Additional participants included representatives from EU agencies such as Europol and ENISA, as well as officials from the UK’s FCDO, DSIT, National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and the Home Office.
Discussion Topics
The dialogue addressed a broad spectrum of issues, including:
- Strategies for improving cyber resilience and securing technology and digital identities.
- Deterrence and responses to cyber threats, including ransomware and other forms of cybercrime.
- Collaborative approaches to ensuring a free, open, secure, and peaceful cyberspace, including engagement with the multi-stakeholder community.
- The Pall Mall Process, which focuses on mitigating the proliferation and misuse of commercial cyber intrusion tools.
- Advancing cyber skills and capacity-building initiatives.
Future Plans
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in addressing shared cybersecurity challenges. It was agreed that the next UK-EU Cyber Dialogue would take place in Brussels in 2025.
This meeting underscores the ongoing partnership between the UK and the EU in fostering a secure digital environment and tackling emerging cyber threats through dialogue and coordinated action.
