The UK Minister for the Overseas Territories, Stephen Doughty, is set to announce new support for Anguilla's health, security, and infrastructure during his first visit to the Overseas Territories
from November 2-4.
During his visit, the minister will inaugurate Anguilla’s new emergency 911 control room, a crucial facility partially funded by the UK government. This new control room will enhance public safety on the island. Additionally, Minister Doughty will confirm funding for two new ambulances expected to arrive by February 2025 and unveil support for an additional search and rescue vessel to bolster Anguilla’s maritime response capabilities.
The minister emphasized the ongoing partnership between the UK and Anguilla. "UK funding for Anguilla is helping islanders live healthier, safer, and more prosperous lives," Doughty said. "The new support I will announce is just the latest chapter in the UK’s close relationship with Anguilla, with sustainable investment and close partnership at its heart."
His itinerary includes visiting the Royal Anguilla Police and National Emergency Operating Centre, where he will acknowledge the recent efforts to curb gang violence. The UK has supported the Royal Anguilla Police Force by deploying seven UK officers to assist with crime reduction and investigations.
The minister will also tour the Princess Alexandra Hospital to better understand the challenges facing Anguilla's healthcare workers. UK support has already led to significant advancements in healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of a dialysis unit, a reconstruction lab, an isolation ward, and a new morgue, which will improve post-mortem and coronial services.
