Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman has expressed her disappointment over the sale of properties originally designated for migrants deported from the UK to local buyers in Rwanda.
According to reports from The Times, out of the 163 affordable homes on the Bwiza Riverside estate, 70% have been sold to local buyers, leaving only space for a few dozen migrants.
Braverman, who visited Kigali in March last year, noted that construction work was progressing steadily at that time. She had previously praised the homes built as part of the 257-unit scheme, describing them as "beautiful" and commending the interior design.
The properties, funded through a public-private partnership between the Kigali government and ADHI Corporate Group, are priced between £14,000 and £27,000.
However, a manager at the estate mentioned that the homes had been sold to "private people who want to live in them."
Braverman voiced her criticism of the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill currently under consideration in Parliament during an interview with LBC. She expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the government's current plan, suggesting that it might only result in a "token flight."
