A vessel operated by the charity organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) successfully rescued nearly 600 migrants who were aboard an overcrowded boat in
distress off the coast of Sicily, according to a tweet from the group. The migrants, including women and children, were safely brought on board the MSF vessel, the Geo Barents, after three hours of operation. The rescue mission took place while the Geo Barents was conducting training activities.
The rescued migrants will be disembarked at the southern port of Bari, as directed by Italian authorities. The journey to reach the port is expected to take approximately 40 hours. Charitable organizations have criticized the Italian administration, led by Giorgia Meloni, for its strict stance against illegal immigration. These organizations argue that the assigned ports are often located far from the areas where rescues occur, causing delays and logistical challenges.
According to data from the Italian interior ministry, over 47,000 migrant landings have been recorded in Italy this year, a significant increase compared to the approximately 18,000 landings reported during the same period in 2022. The escalating number of migrant arrivals highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Italy and the need for coordinated efforts to address migration issues and ensure the safety and well-being of those seeking refuge.
