British Queen celebrates

The Duchess of Edinburgh recently paid a visit to the United Kingdom's first social supermarket, Community Shop, located in Lambeth. Her visit highlighted the pressing issue of food insecurity

and the innovative community initiatives designed to combat it.

At Community Shop, surplus food products donated by partners in the food industry are sold at significantly reduced prices, providing an affordable option for customers while promoting sustainability. The initiative also extends its support through a social hub and a social kitchen, which offer skill-building programs and affordable meals for those in need.

During her tour, Sophie engaged with all aspects of the operation. She explored the shop’s facilities, assisted in preparing and serving meals in the kitchen, and participated in activities within the social hub. These efforts aim to empower individuals and foster a sense of community.

Esther Dennis, a Community Wellbeing Practitioner, expressed the significance of the visit, saying, “The Duchess of Edinburgh’s support today will help to amplify our message as we continue expanding our efforts to tackle food poverty in our local community and nationwide.”

Community Shop operates 13 locations across the UK, including Athersley, Beechwood, Bewsey, Eastfield, Goldthorpe, Grimsby, Halton, Hoyland, Kirkdale, Knottingley, Lambeth, Stocking Farm, and Tong Street.

Gary Stott, Executive Chairman of Community Shop, shared his gratitude, stating, “We are honoured to have welcomed Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Edinburgh, to Community Shop Lambeth today. This Royal Visit highlights the vital importance of our mission and is a real boost for the Community Shop team who work tirelessly to tackle food insecurity. Our Lambeth store provides a lifeline for the local community, and we’re proud to have created a vibrant, welcoming space where people come to share stories, learn, and eat together.”

The visit also included a special moment to celebrate Sophie’s upcoming 60th birthday. She was surprised with an early birthday cake, adding a festive note to the impactful day. Photo by Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Wikimedia commons.
