A convoy of over 50 vehicles, many donated through London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) scrappage scheme, has embarked on a mission to deliver aid to Ukraine.
The fleet, which includes a red London bus, departed from the Ukrainian Embassy in London on Thursday and is expected to take four days to reach Kharkiv in Ukraine's war-torn east.
Loaded with supplies from aid groups in Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Wiltshire, the convoy aims to provide crucial support to local charities in Kharkiv. The red London bus, emblazoned with 'Ukraine' on the windscreen, is filled with aid including food, clothing, and stretchers.
The ULEZ scrappage scheme offers Londoners up to £2,000 for scrapping non-compliant cars. Through a partnership between Transport for London (TfL) and the British-Ukrainian Aid charity, some of these scrapped vehicles have been donated to the humanitarian effort. The red bus will be given to the charity Peaceful Heaven of Kharkiv and will be used to evacuate civilians from hotspots in and around the city.
Along with HUGS, aid groups from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and the Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP) have contributed supplies for the front line.
