Lucy Allan, an MP from Telford, Shropshire, has been suspended by the Conservative Party after endorsing a candidate from Reform UK. Allan claimed that she resigned
from the Conservative Party to support Reform UK candidate Alan Adams for her vacated seat.
Ms. Allan publicly endorsed Mr. Adams instead of Conservative candidate Hannah Campbell. A Conservative Party spokesman announced her immediate suspension, while Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warned that voting for Reform UK could lead to Labour's Keir Starmer gaining power.
Allan described Adams as an alternative to "more of the same politics and more of the same politicians," highlighting his long-standing service and dedication. She first won her seat in 2015 with a narrow majority and secured it again in 2019 with a significant lead of 10,941 votes.
Having known Mr. Adams for many years, Allan praised the Royal Navy veteran as "genuinely the best person for the job." She emphasized her commitment to Telford, stating, "I want the best for Telford and I can't just let the Labour candidate have a walkover."
In response to Allan's actions, Prime Minister Sunak acknowledged people's frustrations but cautioned that voting for Reform UK would inadvertently benefit Labour. "When it comes to Reform, I understand people's frustrations, but a vote for other parties, particularly Reform, all that is going to do is put Keir Starmer in power," he said.
Ms. Allan further endorsed Mr. Adams, describing him as motivated by a "profoundly honourable" desire to serve and not driven by personal gain. She added, "Alan gives Telford a choice, so that Telford does not have to settle for more of the same politics and more of the same politicians."
Following Allan's suspension, a Conservative Party spokesman stated, "The people of Telford now have the chance to vote for a dedicated and hard-working new candidate who will put Telford first."
Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer expressed sadness over Allan's decision to support the Reform UK candidate. “I like Lucy but any broad political organisation like the Conservatives trying to get through the incredibly turbulent time of the last 7 or 8 years…are gonna have the edges where people don't agree and that is fine," he remarked.
A spokesperson for Reform UK expressed delight at Allan's endorsement, stating, "She, like many Conservatives, feels that the Reform party represents traditional centre-right values and priorities in a way that the Conservative Party has long forgotten." Photo by Chris McAndrew, Wikimedia commons.
