Two teenage girls have been apprehended following a violent assault and robbery of a young Jewish woman in north London.
The Metropolitan Police reported that the 20-year-old victim was attacked on Rostrevor Avenue in Stamford Hill by two individuals who fled towards the A10 on Thursday afternoon.
Though bruised, the woman, a member of the orthodox Jewish community, did not require hospitalization, according to reports.
Detectives arrested two girls, aged 13 and 14 from Haringey, on suspicion of robbery. They are currently in custody as the investigation unfolds.
The Met confirmed that the incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime. CCTV footage at the scene indicated that the suspects were dressed in school uniforms during the assault, as stated by Scotland Yard.
Images capturing the assault circulated online after being shared by the neighborhood watch group Shomrim.
Detective Sergeant Asli Benson, leading the investigation, emphasized the gravity of the situation for the victim: "This was a terrifying incident for the young woman who was attacked. We will continue to ensure she has the right support."
Benson expressed concerns about the targeting of the victim due to her appearance as an obvious member of the Jewish community. Acknowledging heightened tensions in the wider Jewish community following recent terror attacks in Israel and subsequent increases in antisemitic hate crimes in London, Benson highlighted the understandable anxiety.
While investigators keep an open mind about the motive, they are treating this incident as a potential hate crime, mindful of the current climate and the rise in antisemitic incidents. Photo by Cheeseburger296, Wikimedia commons.
