British Queen celebrates

Three new Yeoman Warders, commonly known as Beefeaters, have been appointed at the Tower of London, and they will be the first to wear the cypher of King Charles III since his reign

began in September 2022.

Emily Lewis-Garwood, Garry McCormick, and Wayne Glenn have been selected as Yeoman Warders and will proudly display the stylized cypher "CRIII" under a crown on their uniforms. This marks the transition from the previous cypher "ERII," which represented the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Living alongside 32 other Yeoman Warders, Lewis-Garwood, McCormick, and Glenn will reside within the Tower of London. The Yeoman Warders traditionally wear a dark blue "undress" uniform adorned with the monarch's cypher, while the more iconic scarlet and gold uniform is reserved for State functions.

In April, Historic Royal Palaces, the organization responsible for the Tower of London, announced that King Charles III's cypher would be incorporated into the new Yeoman Warder uniforms. Since 1570, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Yeoman Warders have proudly worn the cypher of the reigning sovereign.

Becoming a Yeoman Warder is an honor reserved for individuals with at least 22 years of service in the Armed Forces. They must also have received Long Service and Good Conduct medals, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer or its equivalent in other branches of the military.

The Yeoman Warders, commonly referred to as Beefeaters, have been guardians of the Tower of London since Tudor times. Their name originated in the 17th century and they were established by King Henry VII in 1485. Today, they serve as ceremonial bodyguards for the Sovereign, protectors of the Crown Jewels, guardians of the Tower of London, and offer informative tours.
