Police officers put themselves at risk every day for Londoners. The work that they do ensures that our city is safe, and their bravery never goes unnoticed.
The tragic death of Sergeant Matt Ratana occurred while he was on duty in September this year. Stronger safety measures are needed to ensure a tragedy like this never happens again.
The London Assembly has called on the Mayor of London to work with the Met Commissioner, Cressida Dick, to ensure all practical measures are put in place to ensure the safety of police officers.
Steve O’Connell AM, who proposed the motion said:
“Croydon, and the whole of London, mourn the loss of Sergeant Matt Ratana. We paid tribute to him today, and on behalf of Londoners, we send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
“London’s brave police officers keep us safe every single day. We must protect those who protect us. The murder of Sergeant Matt Ratana shows more must be done to ensure the safety of our city’s officers.
“The Mayor and Met Commissioner must do everything in their power to keep our city’s officers safe and learn any lessons arising from this tragedy.”
Unmesh Desai AM, who seconded the motion said:
“This week, we marked the funeral of Sgt Matt Ratana, a police officer of 30 years who dedicated his life to keeping Londoners safe.
“His exemplary career and larger than life personality have been widely celebrated by the Met Commissioner and his colleagues.
“His tragic murder is a startling reminder of the dangers that our police officers face on a daily basis and the need for the Met to continue to ensure they are given the protections that they need.
“We can be reassured by the fact that the police investigation will leave no stone unturned into bringing those involved in his death to justice.”
