Jonny Clothier, now 62, recently celebrated his long-overdue graduation from the University of Bristol, a joyous event delayed by more than four decades due to an
unusual rent dispute. Back in 1983, Clothier had been forced to leave his student flat after a friend's parrot, left unsupervised, caused significant damage. The resulting debt of £64.80 went unpaid, leading the university to withhold his degree ceremony.
Clothier, from Petersfield, Hampshire, was finally able to don the cap and gown on Thursday, coinciding with the graduation of his youngest son, Carter. Reflecting on the past, Clothier humorously referred to the unpaid rent as an "ultra-long-term, interest-free loan."
During his time as an undergraduate, Clothier met his future wife at the university, a tradition of attendance continued by all three of their children. His career as a TV director is a testament to his achievements despite the delayed ceremony.
The rule that barred students with unpaid accommodation bills from attending graduation ceremonies has long since been abolished. Speaking on his long-awaited graduation day, Clothier expressed immense joy, noting that the experience was "enormous fun."
Carter, who graduated with a degree in biology, remarked on the unique experience of sharing the ceremony with his father, calling it "an amazing day and a beautiful ceremony."
The University of Bristol decided to forgive the debt, allowing Clothier to finally celebrate his academic accomplishments. Prof Evelyn Welch, the university's vice-chancellor, expressed her pleasure at the reunion, wishing the Clothier family all the best for the future. Photo by neopeo, Wikimedia commons.
