During a joint news conference with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged NATO to make a political decision on inviting

Ukraine to join the military alliance.

Zelenskiy expressed his hope that the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius in July could be "historic" and that Ukraine would receive a corresponding invitation to join. He emphasized that there are no objective barriers to Ukraine's accession and that now is the time for NATO to make the necessary decisions, as most people in NATO countries and the majority of Ukrainians support the move.

Zelenskiy also called for security guarantees on Ukraine's path to NATO membership and requested that some NATO members provide heavy weaponry more quickly. Photo by President.gov.ua, Wikimedia commons.
