British Queen celebrates

Emmanuel Macron highlighted the importance of enhancing French involvement in Central Asia, acknowledging the competition for influence in the resource-rich region by Europe, Russia,

China, and Turkey. During his visit to Uzbekistan, Macron endorsed Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's efforts to attract global investment and open the country to international investors. This marks the first visit to Uzbekistan by a French president in nearly three decades.

Uzbekistan, previously isolated after the fall of the USSR, is now pursuing global investment and aims to improve its international image. Critics have pointed out its authoritarian tendencies, with political opposition and dissent suppressed, and a rare episode of civil unrest last year resulting in casualties during clashes between police and protestors.

France has emphasized its support for Uzbekistan's reform initiatives and commitment to the rule of law, reflecting the French government's confidence in the country's strategy. Macron warmly greeted President Mirziyoyev upon his arrival, emphasizing the historic significance of the visit.

Macron's visit to Central Asia garnered the attention of major players like Moscow and Beijing, which have longstanding ties to the region. China's "New Silk Road" infrastructure project relies heavily on Central Asia, and Moscow-led military alliances encompass several nations in the area. However, the conflict in Ukraine has led to a shift in dynamics, providing opportunities for other global powers.

In neighboring Kazakhstan, Macron commended the country for not succumbing to larger powers and for refraining from supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Kazakhstan has chosen to enforce international sanctions against Moscow, highlighting its quest for greater economic openness and balanced diplomacy.

During the visit, around 60 French business leaders joined Macron, resulting in several agreements being signed in the energy, minerals, and transport sectors. French uranium giant Orano announced its extraction of 350 kilograms of uranium in a pilot project and expressed its intentions to expand its presence in Uzbekistan.
