British Queen celebrates

The coronation of King Charles, set to take place on May 6th, 2023 at Westminster Abbey, will see him officially crowned as the reigning monarch following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in

September 2022. The estimated cost of the event, which will also see Camilla crowned as Queen, is around £100 million, according to the Operation Golden Orb committee responsible for planning the ceremony. This is twice the cost of the Queen's coronation in 1953, largely due to expenses such as security, which were not a significant concern at the time.

The government will cover the cost of the event, as it is a state occasion, using taxpayers' money. Cabinet Office minister Oliver Dowden has stated that both the King and the government are mindful of ensuring value for taxpayers' money, and that previous coronations have also been paid for by the government. However, despite the cost, it is anticipated that the coronation will provide a boost to the UK economy of up to £1 billion, thanks to an increase in tourism and an extra Bank Holiday weekend.

Overall, the coronation is expected to be a significant moment in the nation's history, providing joy to millions of people and marking the UK out as a nation around the world. The government is keen to ensure that the ceremony is appropriately celebratory, rather than scrimping and saving on expenses. Photo by Dan Marsh, Wikimedia commons.
