British Queen celebrates

New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has voiced his personal preference for New Zealand to become a republic, but stated that he will not be pushing for the

change during his tenure as leader. Speaking to reporters prior to leaving for the coronation of King Charles III in London, Hipkins acknowledged that New Zealand, a former British colony, is self-governing, but the British monarchy retains a largely ceremonial role as head of state and king. He added that, ideally, New Zealand will become a fully independent country, but he doesn't believe that replacing the governor-general with another head of state is an urgent priority.

While acknowledging that he will be meeting with Charles during his trip, he declined to reveal what they will discuss. Meanwhile, he also plans to meet with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to advance a free trade deal the two nations agreed on in 2021.
