British Queen celebrates

According to a recent poll conducted for ITV News, London, Sadiq Khan is well-positioned for a landslide victory and an unprecedented third term as Mayor of London.

The survey, conducted by Survation and comprising 1,019 Londoners, indicates that the incumbent Labour mayor holds 44% of the vote, while his Conservative rival, Susan Hall, trails significantly at 26%, a margin of eighteen points.

Rob Blackie of the Liberal Democrats and Zoe Garbett of the Green Party are tied at 7%, while Howard Cox of Reform UK stands at 5%.

Should these polling figures translate into results during the Mayoral Election on May 2nd, Mr. Khan would make history by becoming the first mayor to be elected for a third consecutive term at City Hall.

The upcoming May election will adopt the first-past-the-post system for the first time, eliminating the option for voters to select a second preference candidate.

Mr. Khan leads Ms. Hall across all age demographics, except among voters aged 65 and older, where the Conservative candidate holds a 30-point advantage.

Despite Mr. Khan's strong polling numbers, the mayoral race appears to be tighter than the contest for Number 10 in the forthcoming General Election, where Labour is projected to secure 52% of the capital’s votes compared to the Tories’ 21%.

Both leading mayoral candidates have garnered modest positive approval ratings, with Ms. Hall at +5% and Mr. Khan at +4%.

In contrast, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's personal approval rating stands at -19%, while Labour leader Keir Starmer's approval rating is at +10%.

National issues seem to be paramount in voters’ minds leading up to the Mayoral election, with concerns over the Cost of Living (63%), health (38%), and crime levels (38%) ranking as the top priorities.

Local issues such as Ulez (15%) and reform of the Metropolitan Police (13%) are of lesser concern to voters.

The election for the Mayor of London is scheduled for Thursday, May 2nd, coinciding with elections to the London Assembly and some local council elections. Results are anticipated to be announced during the weekend of Saturday, May 4th. Photo by DAVID HOLT from London, England, Wikimedia commons.
