British Queen celebrates

Science Secretary Michelle Donelan revealed plans to enhance the skills of millions across the UK in fields like AI and quantum during a speech at the Maths Summit in London.

Published by the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology, along with Michelle Donelan MP and Victoria Atkins MP, on March 12, 2024, the package aims to train over 4,000 students in future technologies with an investment of more than £1.1 billion.

Donelan outlined detailed strategies to enhance the UK's skill base in vital industries, striving to establish the nation as a hub for highly skilled professionals in future technologies.

A significant portion of the funding, over £1 billion from government, businesses, charities, and academia, will support doctoral training in engineering and physical sciences. This investment will fund 65 Centres for Doctoral Training across the UK, providing exciting opportunities for talented individuals to pursue advanced degrees in key areas.

The initiative aims to decentralize opportunities beyond the southeast of England, with substantial placements available in cities like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol, Sheffield, and Manchester.

Examples of projects include a research center at King's College London focused on advancing personalized surgery through innovative engineering techniques, and efforts at the University of Bristol to utilize artificial intelligence in developing new drugs.

Additionally, over £60 million will be allocated for quantum skills programs until 2034, addressing the growing demand for talent in quantum technologies. This includes funding for quantum PhD studentships, early career researchers, and apprenticeship pathways.

The government is also launching initiatives such as an AI upskilling fund for small and medium enterprises, further bolstering efforts to drive economic growth through technological innovation.

Furthermore, investments will be made in areas like medicines manufacturing, venture capital fellowship programs, and telecoms skills development to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of innovation.

These measures align with the government's commitment to fostering a skilled workforce and capitalizing on the potential of emerging technologies to drive economic prosperity and societal advancement. Photo by mikemacmarketing, Wikimedia commons.
