In a significant move to bolster the renewable energy sector, the government has allocated more than £1 billion for the upcoming Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction, marking the largest
funding commitment ever made to the initiative.
Announced by Chancellor Claire Coutinho MP and Andrew Bowie MP, this substantial budget injection underscores the government's commitment to driving investment in clean, sustainable energy sources while advancing the transition to a net-zero economy.
The sixth CfD allocation round will see £800 million allocated specifically for offshore wind projects, representing a fourfold increase from previous rounds. This substantial funding aims to maintain Britain's leadership in offshore wind technology and support the nation's ambitious goal of achieving up to 50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
The CfD scheme provides renewable energy projects with a guaranteed price for their electricity output, fostering investment in the UK's renewable energy infrastructure. Since its inception, the scheme has played a pivotal role in increasing renewable electricity generation, which now accounts for over 40% of the country's total electricity production.
Moreover, the government's commitment to green industries extends beyond the CfD auction, with an additional £120 million allocated to the Green Industries Growth Accelerator.
