British Queen celebrates

The Welsh Government has taken action to ban several single-use plastics, demonstrating its commitment to addressing climate and nature emergencies. This measure aims to reduce plastic

pollution and aligns with the growing momentum among Welsh communities to embrace a plastic-free lifestyle and combat littering.

As part of this recent rule implementation in Wales, the following single-use plastic items are now prohibited:

-Single-use plastic plates

-Single-use plastic cutlery

-Single-use plastic drinks stirrers

-Cups made of expanded or foamed extruded polystyrene

-Takeaway food containers made of expanded or foamed extruded polystyrene

-Single-use plastic balloon sticks

-Single-use plastic-stemmed cotton buds

-Single-use plastic drinking straws, with exceptions for those who require them for safety and independence.

Julie James, the Minister for Climate Change, expressed:

"This is the initial step in phasing out unnecessary single-use plastic usage and sales in Wales. We are dedicated to eliminating single-use plastic, and the next phase will involve the ban on plastic single-use carrier bags, polystyrene cup lids, and food container lids, as well as products made of oxo-degradable plastic, which will take effect before the end of the Senedd term. Many businesses in Wales have already embraced this change by switching to reusable alternatives or opting for cardboard or paper products when reusables are not feasible. We are also examining plastic-based wet wipes, which can clog drains, contribute to flooding, and introduce microplastic fibers into the environment. By adopting a 'Team Wales' approach and promoting reuse, recycling, and repair, we can contribute to a more environmentally sustainable future for future generations."
