Ikea has revealed that the opening of their anticipated Oxford Street store has been rescheduled to the following year.

The transformation of the former flagship site of Topshop, a project that commenced last year, is currently underway. The store is now expected to welcome customers in the autumn of 2024.

Upon completion, the new Ikea location will feature a deli section offering their renowned meatballs, a market stall, and a spacious showroom. In total, it will present a selection of approximately 6,000 products.

Peter Jelkeby, Chief Executive and Chief Sustainability Officer of Ikea UK, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are immensely thrilled to bring Ikea to the dynamic retail landscape of Oxford Street. This marks a significant milestone in our ongoing expansion initiatives throughout the capital."

Jelkeby continued, "By establishing a presence in one of the world's most iconic shopping destinations, we are advancing our mission to simplify the Ikea shopping experience for customers, allowing them to access our products with ease—whenever, wherever, and however they prefer."

Peter van der Poel, Managing Director of Ingka Investments, emphasized the thoughtful approach to the project, saying, "Preserving the historic essence and ambience of this century-old landmark is our priority as investors. Simultaneously, our aim is to elevate it to contemporary standards with the highest sustainability credentials."

van der Poel added, "Given these aspirations, the extensive refurbishment process requires more time than initially projected. As a result, the anticipated opening date for the Ikea Oxford Street city store is now set for the year 2024." Photo by Nigel Mykura, Wikimedia commons.
