The iconic Blackpool Tower is set to undergo a lighting transformation as plans to replace its ageing lights have been given the green light. Blackpool Council has approved the listed building

consent to remove the deteriorated bulbs from the crow's nest of the Grade I listed landmark and replace them with energy-efficient LED lights.

Recent surveys conducted on the Tower revealed that the thin steel plates used for the lighting strips have suffered significant corrosion. In response to this, seven strips have already been removed, and now the remaining strips will be taken off using specialized equipment.

The installation of the new LED lights is expected to significantly enhance the overall lighting display of the Tower. As the Tower is owned by Blackpool Council, the Local Democracy Reporting Service has noted that the council expects the improved lighting to enhance the visual appeal of the structure.

The proposed LED fittings will be designed to complement the Tower's aesthetic, with each holding an LED lighting unit. One of the benefits of this upgrade is that it will prevent the current lights from obscuring some of the decorative details of the steelwork.

Before giving the final approval, Blackpool Civic Trust and the Victorian Society were both consulted on the replacement plan. Fortunately, no objections were received, and the project can move forward without hindrance.

The council has outlined measures to protect the Tower's fabric during the upgrade process. Skilled operatives will carefully cut through the welded connection points and ensure a smooth and flush supporting structure. This approach aims to minimize the risk of damage to adjacent surfaces.
